Letter From the Under-Secretary Generals

Highly distinguished Participants,

It is our utmost pleasure to welcome you all to this annual session of Gazi Anatolian Highschool Model United Nations 2019. This year we will be serving you as Under-Secretary Generals.

I am Hana Llapashtica and I am currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in Marmara University, majoring in Political Sciences.  It is my honor to serve you as one of your Under Secretary-General responsible for Historical United Nations Security Council as well as my partner. I am deeply pleased and honored to welcome you all to our version of Historical UNSC.

My name is Berke Giray, and I am a junior student studying International Economics and Finance in Bocconi University. I’ve been participating in Model United Nations conferences at various positions since 2013. I am more than honored to serve you with my distinguished partner.

This year, we will be focusing on an agenda item which is carrying tremendous importance in the means of Balkan history. This most crucial international dispute being, The Yugoslavian Civil War. The former Yugoslavia was a Socialist state created after German occupation in World War II and a bitter civil war. A federation of six republics, it brought together Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims, Albanians, Slovenes and others under a comparatively relaxed communist regime. Tensions between these groups were successfully suppressed under the leadership of President Tito. After Tito's death in 1980, tensions re-emerged. Calls for more autonomy within Yugoslavia by nationalist groups led in 1991 to declarations of independence in Croatia and Slovenia. The Serb-dominated Yugoslav army lashed out, first in Slovenia and then in Croatia. Thousands were killed in the latter conflict.

Your timeline will start well after the death of Josip Broz Tito, -when the tempers of the regions were the highest- in the august of 1990 and will proceed depending on the progress of the committee. You each will be assigned with countries or autonomous governments and a respective person in charge of representing the nation. The details will be further explained to you in your study guides.

GAMUN 2019 will be a rewarding experience for all participants to broaden their horizons, creating alternative futures and possibilities for today’s world and will find new and intriguing solutions to many crucial world problems. We wholeheartedly hope that every single participant will enrich their experiences in this conference which will last 4 days in numbers but eternal in terms of valueand memories.

May the everlasting spirit and inspiration be with you!
